INSTRUCTIONS
Hospitals: An Institution which is operated for the medical, surgical and / or obstetrical care of in-patient and which is treated as a hospital by the central / state Government / Local Body or licensed by the appropriate authority.
Definitions:
1. General: All establishments permanently staffed by at least two or more medical officers which can offer in-patient accommodation and provide active medical and nursing care round the clock for 24 hours for more than one category of medical discipline (e.g., General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics, etc.)
2. Specialised: Hospitals providing medical and nursing care primarily for only one discipline for a specialised disease / affection of one system (e.g., Tuberculosis, Leprosy, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Cardiac, Mental, Cancer, Eyes, ENT, Infectious Diseases, VD, AIDS, Maternity, etc.). The specialised department administratively attached to a general hospital and sometimes located in an annex or separate ward may be excluded and their beds should not be considered in this category of specialised hospital.
3. Teaching - A Hospital which is attached to a college recognised by Medical / Dental Council for Medical / Dental Education.  
4. Isolation - A Hospital for the care of persons suffering from diseases requiring isolation of the patient.
Code structure for Type of Hospitals (col. 6):  1- General, 2 - Teaching, 3 - Cancer,  4 - Cardiology,  5 -Dental, 6 - ENT,  7 - Ophthalmic,  8 - Gynaecology,  9 - Leprosy,  10 - Maternity, 11 - Mental,  12 - Neurology, 13 - Orthopaedic, 14 - Paediatrics 15 - plastic Surgery 16 - TB & Chest Diseases 17 - Burns 18 - Urology 19 - Infectious Diseases 20 - Multispecialities
Management:
1.Central Government - All hospitals administered by Govt. of India viz.run by Railways, Defence, Mining, ESI, Post and Telegraph, Public sector undertaking of Central Government.
2. State Government - All hospitals administered by  State / UT Govt. authority and Public Sector undertakings operated by State / UT including Police, Jail and Others
3. Local Bodies - All hospitals administered by  Local Bodies like ,Municipal Corporation, Municipalities, Zilla Parishad. Panchayat, etc.
4. Autonomous Bodies- All established under special Acts of Parliament, State Legislation and funded by Central / State or UT Government
5. Private - All Hospitals run by individuals or by a private organisatoin
6. Voluntary Organisation - all Hospitals run by a Voluntary body, a trust, charitable society, registered or recognised by the appropriate authority under central or state laws, Missionary Body and cooperative.
